Jesus once said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
This teaching is often understood to mean that people should fulfill their responsibilities in society, such as paying taxes and obeying fair laws. Caesar was the ruler, and he already had wealth and power. Yet Jesus still said to give Caesar what belonged to him.
But this also teaches us something deeper.
If we are expected to give to a rich ruler what is required, then we should be even more willing to give to the poor what they need.
The poor often lack food, shelter, clothing, and basic care. Unlike Caesar, they do not have power or riches. They depend on kindness, mercy, and justice from others.
So the lesson is not only about paying what we owe to the government. It is also about remembering our duty to help those in need.
If we give to those who already have much, how much more should we give to those who have little?
True faith should lead us to generosity. It should move us to care for the poor, support the weak, and share what we have.
When we give to the poor, we are also giving to God.
