The names Yeshayahu and Yehoshua contain the name of Yahweh and point to the meaning “Yahweh saves.” Yet this reveals something deeper: Yahweh Himself is the one who saves, serves, and accomplishes His good purpose.
Yahweh is not merely called a servant in the sense of being under someone else’s authority. Rather, Scripture reveals Him as the One who serves His creation according to His goodness and purpose. His actions are not selfish or arbitrary. Everything He does is directed toward what is good.
He is therefore not simply a servant, but a good servant.
The distinction is important. A servant may perform a task simply because it is required. But a good servant acts faithfully, willingly, and with the good of those being served in mind. Yahweh’s works demonstrate this perfectly. He provides, sustains, saves, restores, and fulfills His promises.
The name “Yahweh saves” therefore expresses more than God’s ability to rescue. It reveals His character: Yahweh is the One who acts for salvation and does so in goodness.
He is not just servant.
He is the good servant.
This is where Jesus comes into view.
His name bears the meaning “Yahweh saves,” but He does more than carry the name. He embodies it. In Jesus, Yahweh’s saving work is no longer only promised, proclaimed, or anticipated. It stands before us in flesh and blood.
